Encryption plays a key role in many of today's telecom and network technologies and services. We'll begin by understanding symmetric key encryption vs. asymmetric key encryption, public key encryption (PKI) and private key encryption. Then we'll explore implementations, including digital certificates for secure web browsing, digital signatures for authentication, IP VPNs and SD-WANs for secure point-to-point Internet communications, country-spoofing VPNs, and basics of anonymizer VPNs and the Dark Web.
Course Lessons
1. Introduction - Encryption: Certificates, VPNs, SD-WANs and the Dark Web
2. Public Key and Private Key Encryption
3. Digital Certificates, SSL and TLS
4. IP VPN Tunnels
5. SD-WANs
6. Country-Spoofing VPN Service
7. Anonymizer VPN Service: Tor Virtual Circuits
8. The Dark Web
Based on Teracom’s famous Course 111, tuned and refined over the course of 20 years of instructor-led training, we’ll cut through the jargon to demystify network fundamentals, explaining the jargon and buzzwords, the underlying ideas, and how it all works together… in plain English.
A course completion certificate is awarded upon passing the course exam.
Course Outline
1. Introduction - Encryption: Certificates, VPNs, SD-WANs and the Dark Web
2. Public Key and Private Key Encryption
The fundamentals: symmetric encryption, and asymmetric encryption. Secret keys, public keys and private keys. Secure communications and digital signatures. AES and DES. RSA encryption and Elliptic-Curve Diffie-Hellman Ephemeral cryptography.
3. Digital Certificates, SSL and TLS
The purpose of a digital certificate and the server identity key. Certificate issuance and installation on a server. Downloading the certificate to a browser. Using the public key in the certificate to authenticate Diffie-Hellman secret session key establishment for TLS and encryption of HTTP client-server messages. TLS vs SSH. https.
4. IP VPNs and Tunnels
"Virtual" in Virtual Private Network means that it appears to the user there are dedicated point-to-point circuits between buildings, but in reality, there are many users' packets interspersed on the physical circuits used for the connections, which are usually over the Internet. We'll cover IPsec, a collection of standards, and how they are used to implement encrypted tunnels for secure communications over the Internet, and how that compares to MPLS VPNs and TLS.
5. SD-WANs
A Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) implements communications with information confidentiality between multiple locations of an organization, in IP packets, using pairwise IP VPN tunnels over the Internet. We'll cover fundamentals, and practical considerations regarding supply and management of SD-WAN services.
6. Country-Spoofing VPN Service
How a Network Address Translator (NAT) is deployed by a country-spoofing service provider in a target country to make it appear that packets originate from that country; and why this service is not free.
7. Anonymizer VPN Service: Tor Virtual Circuits
How anonymous communication of HTTP client-server messages is accomplished using three relays with encryption or decryption at each step to implement a Tor virtual circuit to the third relay, which opens an ordinary HTTP over TLS over TCP connection to the server. We do a slightly deep dive on the mechanics of the Tor virutal circuit as an effective method of reinforcing knowledge of how secret keys are created and used.
8. The Dark Web
Finishing with an interesting topic, that also illustrates how asymmetrical keys with their public component and private component, and secret symmetric keys are used to connect a browser to a web server without the IP address of the server ever being known, which is how the web server is kept "dark". What the dark web is, how it operates, how dark web sites are advertised, how Ross Ulbricht ran the Etsy of illegal goods, and how he was caught.
