Teracom Tutorial: IPTV Triple-Play Delivery Architecture
Below is a top-level architecture diagram used as a model for understanding delivery of the "triple-play" from the phone company: telephone, Internet and television/video-on-demand. This diagram illustrates one implementation of the "last mile" on fiber, i.e. the access circuit from the network to the customer, using Active Optical Ethernet, plus in-home networking.
There are several other implementations of the last mile on fiber including Passive Optical Network and proprietary systems using separate wavelengths for different kinds of traffic that are not illustrated on this general model.
This diagram is taken from Course 103: The New Generation All-IP Telecom Network.
The next diagrams in the book focus on the many choices for the "last foot", that is, in-home networking or customer-premise networking, the connections from the optical network terminal or VDSL2 modem to the IPTV set-top boxes at the residence, and the many different customer-premise devices and connections including Netflix Internet video via a DVD player or Wii console in parallel with the IPTV service.
